| First-time substance users generally don’t find their drugs on the street. They find it in their home among everyday items used by the family. Do you have aerosol cans, cleaning fluids, and removers scatters around your house? These are inhalants, a gateway drug easily accessible by young teens. |
| Inhalants are products that produce breathable chemical vapors that cause mind-altering affects, similar to alcohol. Because inhalants are breathed, they quickly enter the user’s blood system, causing an almost immediate affect. According to the 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 729,000 young people, ages 12 and up, used some type of inhalant to get high during the past 12 month period. 70% of these first-time users were under 18. In fact, 1 in 5 children will abuse inhalants by the 8th grade. 8th grade students show the highest level of inhalant abuse, with a higher percentage being female. |
| Why do young people use inhalants? It’s easy they can find them anywhere around their own home or garage. They are also cheap. Common types of inhalant products include but are not limited to: |

| How are these everyday products used to get high? The inhalant user may sniff or snort the fumes directly from the container. They may also spray the product directly into their nose or mouth. Other ways fumes are introduced include bagging, where the vapor is sprayed directly into a plastic or paper bag, then placed over the nose and mouth to breathe the fumes; and huffing. Huffing occurs when a rag or clothing is soaked with the product, then it is held over the nose and mouth or even stuffed into the mouth. |
| How can parents recognize the signs and symptoms of inhalant use? We would first like to recommend prevention, and this is a good month to get started, National Poison Prevention Month. Lock up or protect any products that could potentially be abused. Keep an inventory of items and pay attention to how quickly products are used up. Then look for these common signs and symptoms: |

| Inhalant abuse is not something to be taken lightly. The products used are toxic and hazardous. Improper use of inhalants can cause damage to the brain and nervous system; organ damage; convulsions and seizures; choking caused from inhaled vomit; secondary injuries from accidents; and even death. |
| Drugs are chemicals or substances that change the way our bodies work. When you put them into your body (often by swallowing, inhaling, or injecting them), drugs find their way into your bloodstream and are transported to parts of your body, such as your brain. In the brain, drugs may either intensify or dull your senses, alter your sense of alertness, and sometimes decrease physical pain. |
| A drug may be helpful or harmful. The effects of drugs can vary depending upon the kind of drug taken, how much is taken, how often it is used, how quickly it gets to the brain, and what other drugs, food, or substances are taken at the same time. Effects can also vary based on the differences in body size, shape, and chemistry. |
| Although substances can feel good at first, they can ultimately do a lot of harm to the body and brain. Drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, taking illegal drugs, and sniffing glue can all cause serious damage to the human body. Some drugs severely impair a person’s ability to make healthy choices and decisions. |

| Our preferred sample for drug testing and evaluation is full length hair strands collected at the skin or scalp level. Roots or follicles are not required so no need to “pluck” your hair strand sample. We can test other body hair including eyebrows, underarm, chest, back, arms, legs, and pubic. These samples can reflect drug ingestion for a 6 (six ) month period of time prior to the sample collection date due to a much slower growth rate. The average growth rate for human scalp hair is about 1/2″/month. Therefore, for the sake of discussion, let’s say that you ingested some type of drug about three (3) months ago and you collected your hair strand test sample today. Assuming the amount of the drug you ingested was at a detectable level that drug would likely be found in the third half inch segment measured from the scalp out. We also assume that the segment containing the detectable drug was not trimmed or cut away. Be sure that the sample you submit for testing meets these guidelines |

Marijuana |
| The cannabis plant. A preparation made from the dried flower clusters and leaves of the cannabis plant, usually smoked or eaten to induce euphoria. |
Cocaine |

| A fatty acid C4H8O3 that is a metabolite of gamma-amino butyric acid, that is a depressant of the central nervous system, and that is used illicitly to produce sedative and euphoric effects or to stimulate release of growth hormone to increase muscle mass called also gamma Hydroxybutyrate. |
Xanax |
| Alprazolam, like all benzodiazepines, has the potential for abuse. Although it is not manufactured illegally and its misuse and abuse is dwarfed by benzodiazepines like flunitrazepam and temazepam, it is still often diverted to the black market, particularly in the United States where alprazolam is the most widely prescribed benzodiazepine. The state of relaxation, anxiolysis, and disinhibition induced by benzodiazepines is the main reason for their illicit use. |
